What is a fan?

Fan is a machine equipped with two or more blades to push the air flow. The blades will transform the rotating mechanical energy applied on the shaft into the increase of pressure to push the gas flow. This transformation is accompanied by fluid movement.

The test standard of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) limits the fan to a gas density increase of not more than 7% when passing through the air inlet to the air outlet, which is about 7620 Pa (30 inches of water column) under standard conditions. If its pressure is greater than 7620Pa (30 inches of water column), it belongs to “compressor” or “blower”·

The pressure of fans used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, even in high-speed and high-pressure systems, usually does not exceed 2500-3000Pa (10-12 inches of water column)·

The fan consists of three main components: impeller (sometimes called turbine or rotor), driving equipment and shell.

In order to accurately predict the operation of the fan, the designer should know:

(a) How to evaluate and test the wind turbine;

(b) Impact of air duct system on fan operation.

Different types of fans, even the same type of fans produced by different manufacturers, have different interactions with the system
