Rescue Air Cushion Deployment: Five Requirements and Three Safety Red Lines

Reviewed by Megan Chan, General Sales Manager, Zhejiang Lion King Ventilator Co., Ltd.

When fire breaks out in a high-rise building and the stairwell is blocked by smoke, a rescue air cushion is often the only means of survival left for occupants trapped on the upper floors. Yet in far too many real deployments, the cushion is laid out in the wrong position, inflated to the wrong pressure, or used far beyond its rated bearing height — turning a life-saving device into a secondary hazard.

As a manufacturer of fire protection and ventilation equipment, we believe the greatest risk is not a defective cushion, but an incorrectly deployed one. Below is the field-tested deployment standard our customers apply on high-rise projects.

Site compliance comes first

Before anything else, confirm the deployment site is compliant. This single step is the most effective way to avoid fall risk. Site selection determines whether the cushion can perform at all — no cushion can compensate for a badly chosen site.

Five mandatory deployment requirements

1. Ground hardness standard. Flat, level ground only. No standing water, no sharp bumps or raised edges. Uneven ground causes the cushion to deform under load, creating force imbalance and hidden dangers for anyone landing on it.

2. Clearance safety standard. Nothing may project over the cushion directly above — no overhanging balconies, no air-conditioner outdoor units, no tree branches. The fall trajectory must be vertical and unobstructed. Reserve an adequate safety buffer zone around the whole site and stay clear of perimeter walls and guardrails.

3. Building alignment standard. Precisely align the centre of the cushion with the escape window, or with the vertical landing point of the balcony, while maintaining a safe buffer distance from the facade. Too close to the wall and the occupant rebounds off it; too far and the occupant lands in empty space.

4. Environmental standard. No open flames near the site, no high-temperature equipment, no accumulated debris. The cushion must be held in a stable, fully inflated state.

5. Placement standard. The windbreak ropes must never be tied to a fixed object. The cushion has to remain mobile so it can be repositioned within seconds if the emergency position changes.

Three safety red lines that cannot be crossed

Red line 1 — height and decision. Confirm the building height before deployment and verify it is within the rated bearing range of the cushion. Once the buffer limit is exceeded, the rescue will fail directly. Ultra-high falls can easily cause casualties.

Red line 2 — equipment and condition. Confirm the cushion is inflated uniformly to standard saturation pressure, with no damage, no seam opening and no air leakage, and with all four corners firmly secured. Operating defective equipment is strictly forbidden. If condition is not up to standard, stop using it immediately.

Red line 3 — environment and scene. Never deploy where falling objects are present, where open flames or heavy smoke exist, or where strong wind, rain, snow, or wet, muddy and icy ground are present. Under such conditions the stability of the equipment drops sharply, the risk becomes uncontrollable, and deployment and use are strictly prohibited.

A last resort, not a universal safe haven

The rescue air cushion is an emergency safeguard. It does not replace professional rescue and orderly evacuation, and it is not intended for minors or people with limited mobility to attempt unassisted. Where professional rescue remains possible, it takes priority. For vulnerable occupants, dedicated assistance is mandatory.

Equipment selection is a specification decision, not a procurement decision

High-rise project specifications routinely list a rescue air cushion as a line item — often with no deployment standard attached. The result is a compliant purchase that fails on the day it is needed. We recommend specifying the rated bearing height, the inflation pressure standard, the corner-fixing requirement and the site compliance criteria as part of the tender documents, so that the equipment arrives with a deployment method attached, not just a carton.

Zhejiang Lion King Ventilator Co., Ltd. and Taizhou Lion King Signal Co., Ltd. manufacture rescue air cushions, smoke exhaust fans, positive pressure blowers, fire alarms and sirens, and firefighting hardware, with factory-direct supply and export documentation.
